Lawson's Dry Hills The Pioneer Gewürztraminer 2009

Region |
Marlborough |
Tasting Notes |
The nose of this wine has wonderful complexity with lychee, dried fruits, rose petals, lemon and spice, all competing for prominence. Medium in style this wine has glorious texture with a rich round mouthfeel, great concentration and a lovely spiceness on the finish. Flavours of citrus peel, paw paw, nectarine, musk and Chinese five spice combine to produce an alluring palate. |

Winemakers Notes |
In 2009 three picks were made from this vineyard. The first and the last were used in this blend. The first pickwas from younger vines(five years old), that had very low crop levels and ripened early with no botryis influence. This portion was fermented in older French oak barriques with wild yeast. The last pick was made in late April after a long slow ripening had allowed wonderful flavour development. A small amount of shrivelled and botryised fruit helped provide intensity, complexity of flavour and concentration. The juice was slowly fermented in tank for two months. |
Viticulture Notes |
Harvested entirely from the vineyard that Roos and Barbara Lawson planted in the early 1980's on Alabama Road, just outside the township of Blenheim. The soils and vine clone planted here provide us with a wine style that has good palate density and complex aromatics. |
Cellaring |
We expect this wine to age in a very graceful way over the next five to six years. |
