Vintage Report 2014
May 16, 2014
VINTAGE 2014.....The character of each vintage is shaped by mother nature with various weather and climatic events throughout the year. The 2013/2014 growing season was warm, early flowering and we had a successful fruit set, with the potential for a high crop. The summer continued to be warm and dry until the middle of April, which was wet. This was a challenging time for the wineries who were yet to harvest their fruit. Here at Lawson's Dry Hills we took care to limit crop levels through careful shoot thinning and fruit management allowing the vines to ripen the grapes earlier, so we could harvest before the rain came. We are delighted with the intensity and concentration of flavours and can't wait to see them translated into the finished wines.
The harvest started early March with the Pinot Noir for our Rosé and then Chardonnay, the quality of the grapes was ideal - the balance of the sugar and acidity was perfect and we have captured some outstanding flavours. A sign of exciting things to come!. The Pinot Noir came in ripe and juicy and at low crop levels, the depth of colour and flavour of the resulting wines are a good indication that it will be another cracker vintage for Lawson's Dry Hills and other Marlborough Pinot Noirs.
We are of course a Marlborough producer and Sauvignon Blanc is vitally important to us and something we take great pride in. Lots of sunshine and fine weather allowed us to pick the vineyards as they reached their optimum ripeness, the flavours are typically punchy with plenty of ripe passionfruit balanced with fresh herbal notes, resulting in a dynamic range of aromas and flavours. The acids are nicely balanced and we have a broad range of characters from our geographically diverse vineyard sites, all of which provide us with wonderful option when it comes to blending.
In summary, we are genuinely excited by the 2014 vintage and believe that we have captured the essence of the region and the grape varieties within our range of wines, they will offer an authentic taste of this excellent vintage - we very much look forward to sharing it with you - Marcus Wright, Senior Winemaker, Lawson's Dry Hills.
